After serving 19 years in prison on hard labour, Jean Valjean – prisoner 24601 – is released on parole only to meet the Bishop of Dean and rob him. However the bishop protects him from the police and lets him go free.
Using a new name of Monsieur Madeleine, the ex-convict goes on to becoming a wealthy factory owner and the mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer. Here he meets Fantine, one of his workers, who is deeply upset because she is dismissed by one of his foremen and cannot support her illegitimate daughter.
The story goes on about how he falls in love with her and doe his best help her daughter.
